Public domain, including commercial use; no permission required. https://www.naturalearthdata.com/about/terms-of-use/ DATA The following NOAA CoastWatch ERDDAP dataset metadata explicitly permit free use and redistribution. Data are supplied without warranties and are not intended for legal use. No agency endorsement is claimed. NOAA/NCEP GFS, distributed through PacIOOS and NOAA CoastWatch: https://upwell.pfeg.noaa.gov/erddap/info/ncep_global/index.html 10m wind components, 2m temperature, precipitation rate, sea-level pressure, and 2m relative humidity. Approximately 1-degree samples; forecast valid time is selected near the current UTC time. Kelvin is converted to Celsius, wind m/s to km/h, pressure Pa to hPa, precipitation kg/m2/s to mm/h. NOAA CoastWatch Caribbean / NOAA AOML geostrophic currents: https://cwcgom.aoml.noaa.gov/erddap/info/miamicurrents/index.html Satellite-derived geostrophic u/v components, approximately 1-degree samples. Coverage approximately 64.7S–64.7N; not a complete wind/tide-driven flow model. NASA JPL MUR analysed sea-surface temperature, NOAA CoastWatch distribution: https://coastwatch.pfeg.noaa.gov/erddap/info/jplMURSST41/index.html NASA JPL MUR anomaly, NOAA CoastWatch processing/distribution: https://coastwatch.pfeg.noaa.gov/erddap/info/jplMURSST41anom1day/index.html Anomaly uses a 2003–2014 seasonal reference; recent values can be revised. Both are sampled at approximately 1 degree for this global overview. NOAA WaveWatch III, PacIOOS / NOAA CoastWatch distribution: https://upwell.pfeg.noaa.gov/erddap/info/ww3_global/index.html Significant wave height; approximately 1-degree samples, 77.5S–77.5N. Clouds view: NOAA / NCEP GFS Total_cloud_cover_entire_atmosphere (%). Public model data served through the University of Wisconsin THREDDS mirror: https://thredds.aos.wisc.edu/thredds/dodsC/grib/NCEP/GFS/Global_0p25deg/Best.html The 0.25-degree model is sampled at 0.5 degrees and interpolated for display. Cloud cover is a model estimate through the atmosphere, not satellite imagery. Retained legacy NASA GIBS / Terra and Aqua MODIS satellite adapter (not the Clouds view): Layers: MODIS_Terra_CorrectedReflectance_TrueColor, MODIS_Aqua_CorrectedReflectance_TrueColor, MODIS_Terra_Data_No_Data, MODIS_Aqua_Data_No_Data. Images and masks share one dated UTC day, with an additional day allowed for processing. Missing coverage reveals the base map. The outer Mercator rows are transparent at the polar limits. No cloud-cover percentage or other measurement is inferred from RGB. Official coverage mask definition: https://gibs.earthdata.nasa.gov/colormaps/v1.3/MODIS_Data_No_Data.xml We acknowledge the use of imagery provided by services from NASA's Global Imagery Browse Services (GIBS), part of NASA's Earth Science Data and Information System (ESDIS). https://nasa-gibs.github.io/gibs-api-docs/ https://www.earthdata.nasa.gov/engage/open-data-services-software/data-use-policy https://www.nasa.gov/nasa-brand-center/images-and-media/ NASA imagery generally is not subject to copyright in the United States; this scientific imagery is used with attribution and without implying NASA endorsement. No NASA logo, commercial satellite imagery or recognisable person is used. The provider's colour scale is retained. Daily imagery is fetched for the latest available complete day, with gaps left transparent. DISPLAY AND ACCESS Data are retrieved when a layer opens or is refreshed. Numerical datasets are cached in page memory for 15 minutes. The site's same-origin service retrieves global JSON datasets from NOAA ERDDAP and caches them for 15 minutes; it sends no device coordinates. The data's actual valid timestamp is displayed; older data are flagged. Interpolated values are approximate. Missing values are not filled with zero. Motion is accelerated and illustrative of the vector field, not real-time travel. A global overview is not a local forecast, navigation aid or warning service. The renderer uses original WebGL shaders with a Canvas fallback. Scalar values are bilinearly interpolated on the GPU, with valid-neighbour renormalization and a soft coverage edge. No-data cells are never treated as physical zero. D3 supplies projection/coastline geometry; trails integrate source u/v components. At source outages, previously loaded numerical grids may remain available for up to 24 hours from retrieval, explicitly labelled with the unchanged valid time. The official PacIOOS OPeNDAP service is a model fallback with dynamic available time discovery. NOAA mirrors may redirect to this same upstream host. https://pae-paha.pacioos.hawaii.edu/thredds/dodsC/ncep_global/NCEP_Global_Atmospheric_Model_best.ncd.das https://pae-paha.pacioos.hawaii.edu/thredds/dodsC/ww3_global/WaveWatch_III_Global_Wave_Model_best.ncd.das EARTHQUAKE REPORTS AND MOTION (added 3 October 2026) USGS official all_day/all_week GeoJSON summary feeds; checked every minute while this page is visible. Feed generation times and preliminary/reviewed status are shown; events may be revised. Only earthquake-type events are mapped. USGS data are generally public domain unless otherwise noted, with source credit requested. https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/feed/v1.0/geojson.php https://www.usgs.gov/information-policies-and-instructions/copyrights-and-credits Marker pulses indicate epicentre locations; they are not seismic wavefronts or shaking-in-progress alerts. The tsunami screening flag is not used as a warning. The 10 m wind field is a separately labelled companion overlay on atmospheric scalar maps and cloud-top imagery. Geostrophic currents accompany ocean surface temperature and anomaly. These movements do not advect or evolve scalar colors. WaveWatch III Tdir supplies peak FROM direction. Original crest marks travel opposite that bearing with illustrative speed; they do not predict arrival time. Angular bearings are converted to east/north components before interpolation. Gentle camera rotation is a browsing effect, not time-lapse. Pause/reduced-motion controls apply across all layers. Data dates remain unchanged by animation. CITY AND STREET MAPS — added 3 October 2026 MapLibre GL JS 6.4.1 (BSD-3-Clause), self-hosted browser distribution. Full bundled notices: /vendor/LICENSE.txt Source: https://github.com/maplibre/maplibre-gl-js/tree/v6.4.1 Public vector map service and style: https://openfreemap.org/ Commercial use is allowed. Terms: https://openfreemap.org/tos/ Attribution: OpenFreeMap © OpenMapTiles Data from OpenStreetMap. OpenStreetMap data: ODbL, https://www.openstreetmap.org/copyright Style remains provider-hosted; attribution stays visible at every zoom. OpenFreeMap provides no SLA; map detail depends on that public service. Weather tiles are generated locally in a browser worker from the existing NOAA/NASA data. Reprojection/interpolation and reduced opacity at city zoom do not increase the underlying scientific resolution. GLOBAL FIRE DETECTIONS — added 4 October 2026 NASA LANCE FIRMS Suomi-NPP VIIRS 375 m active-fire / thermal anomaly CSV. We acknowledge the use of data from NASA’s Fire Information for Resource Management System (FIRMS), part of NASA’s Earth Science Data and Information System (ESDIS). NASA data are openly shared; reuse follows NASA’s data-use and citation guidance. No NASA endorsement or logo is implied. https://firms.modaps.eosdis.nasa.gov/active_fire/ https://firms.modaps.eosdis.nasa.gov/data/active_fire/viirs/csv/SUOMI_VIIRS_C2_Global_24h.csv https://forum.earthdata.nasa.gov/viewtopic.php?t=5184 https://www.earthdata.nasa.gov/engage/open-data-services-software/data-use-policy Rendering, controls, CSV adapter, and observation replay are original project code on the existing BSD-3-Clause MapLibre renderer. No proprietary fire-map UI, third-party animation, commercial fire tiles, or NASA logo is embedded. The same-origin service checks one fixed public global CSV, with five-minute caching and labelled prior data for at most one hour after retrieval failure. It sends no visitor coordinates. Source observation and retrieval times are shown. Low-confidence pixels are excluded by default; users can include them. Clusters count detection pixels, not wildfire incidents. Nominal 375 m resolution is not a precise ground perimeter; scan/track footprint varies. Original animated flame icons highlight locations. Replay reveals acquisition times, not fire spread, flames in progress, evacuation zones, or predicted arrival. Clear areas are not an all-clear: clouds, overpasses, and detection limits apply. The retained legacy cloud-temperature adapter uses NASA GIBS MODIS_Cloud_Top_Temp colour definitions (checked 4 October 2026); it is not the displayed Clouds layer: https://gibs.earthdata.nasa.gov/colormaps/v1.3/MODIS_Cloud_Top_Temp.xml The original XML is retained in the source checkout. Text values describe the exact displayed pixel's published colour bin, not raw sensor values. Unknown, blended or partially transparent colours are not decoded.
