ACCESSIBILITY

Use the site your way.

Keyboard controls, readable reports and alternatives to animated maps.

Keyboard navigation

Use Tab and Shift+Tab to move between links and controls. The first link skips navigation to the main content. Press Enter to activate a link; use Enter or Space for buttons. Native select menus and sliders work with arrow keys. Mobile navigation can be opened with the Menu button and closed with Escape. Focus outlines identify the active control.

Maps without dragging

Planet View offers zoom buttons, a keyboard-enabled basemap, and a preset places and an inspect-centre control. Earthquake and fire reports are available as text lists with paging controls; selecting a report opens its details and moves the map. Fire counts represent satellite detections, not confirmed incidents. The public-place earthquake history provides distances without requiring a map.

Charts and animations

Hourly forecast charts include an expandable table of values and a keyboard-operated time slider. Space View supplies event details, playback time, arrival estimates and orientation information as text alongside the animation. Map colours have labelled units and scales. Pause controls stop motion; the footer also lets you pause automatic data updates and refresh manually. Browser or operating-system reduced-motion preferences are respected.

Reading and display

You can enlarge browser text and zoom the page. Layouts are designed to reflow on small screens, with scrollable data tables where necessary. Informative images have text alternatives, decorative illustrations are hidden from assistive technology, and forms have visible labels. Interactive results use status messages where appropriate.

Technical target and scope

Our technical accessibility target is WCAG 2.2 Level AA. Accessibility is an ongoing part of development, including automated checks and manual keyboard and display checks. This statement is not a legal certification or a claim that third-party websites meet the same standard. External data and map services can be unavailable; use the text reports, local conditions desk and linked official sources as alternatives.
