Follow exclusion zones and evacuation instructions. Never approach an eruption to watch it.
Before: make the plan
- Know your local volcano observatory and official alert channels. Study evacuation routes away from hazard zones.
- Plan protection for drinking water, essential equipment, and pets if ash falls.
- Keep suitable eye protection and particulate respirators with your kit, and learn how to use them.
During: protect people
- Leave hazardous areas when instructed. Avoid valleys and channels where volcanic mudflows may travel.
- If officials advise sheltering during ashfall, stay indoors with doors and windows closed.
- Minimise driving through ash. A particulate respirator does not protect against volcanic gases.
After: recover carefully
- Wait for local guidance before returning or cleaning up. Ash can remain hazardous after an eruption pauses.
- Follow official cleaning advice. Avoid unsafe roof access and keep ash out of drains.
