About this view Wind currents

Colours show wind speed. Trails follow the forecast wind direction.

Global patterns, not an address-level forecast. Blank areas mean missing data. Check official local warnings for immediate decisions.

NOAA · NASA · USGS. Source times are shown; observations and models have different update schedules. Earthquake reports may be revised and small events are not comprehensively reported worldwide.

Sources, open-source software & how motion works

This globe uses MapLibre GL JS and OpenFreeMap maps from OpenStreetMap. Zoom in for cities, roads and neighborhoods. Map detail increases with zoom; weather retains its original global resolution. Atmospheric trails show surface wind; ocean trails show geostrophic currents. Rotation is a browsing effect, not a forecast animation. Quake pulses mark reported epicentres, not seismic-wave travel. Fire markers use NASA FIRMS Suomi-NPP VIIRS satellite heat detections, with clustering at global zoom and an observation replay. Flame icons are illustrative markers, not live footage or a simulation of fire spread.

UNDERSTAND THE DATA

How to use recent earthquake map.

What does the earthquake map show?

The map plots reported epicentres from the US Geological Survey. Filter by observation period and minimum magnitude, then select an event for its time, depth and source report. Marker size represents magnitude. The rings highlight locations; they do not show shaking in progress or seismic waves moving across the Earth.

How do I find the closest earthquake?

Open Local conditions and choose a preset public place. The history cards distinguish the most recent nearby earthquake from the closest earthquake during the selected search period. Change the radius, history and minimum magnitude to see the scope of the search. Distance is measured to the epicentre from an approximate postal-area coordinate.

Is an epicentre distance a measure of danger?

No. Shaking depends on depth, magnitude, ground conditions, construction and other factors. An event near a postal area does not tell you how strongly a particular building shook. Small earthquakes are not comprehensively reported worldwide, and automatic reports can be revised after review.

Can recent earthquakes predict the next one?

This map is a report explorer, not an earthquake prediction system. Prepare your home, identify safe places to take cover, and know the instructions from your local earthquake and emergency agencies. The event link opens the original USGS report for more context.
